Cognism positions itself as a sales intelligence platform with a European data advantage. It's known for GDPR-aligned contact data, verified mobile numbers, direct dials, and intent signals like Cognism Signals for account-based selling.
Apollo is a broader revenue platform. It combines a large contact database with email verification, engagement sequencing, and CRM-lite features. It's way easier to start with. That ease is a double-edged sword.
If you only read feature lists, you'll probably pick Apollo. If you calculate the cost of bad data, you might not.
Dimension 1: Data coverage vs compliance
Apollo wins on raw volume. You can find contacts for almost any account, and that speed is valuable in the short term. Cognism wins on coverage where it actually matters for European outbound: GDPR-compliant mobile numbers and direct dials. Period.
Under GDPR Article 5(1)(d), personal data must be accurate and kept up to date. That's not a marketing line. It's a legal requirement. When a vendor can't show you where a phone number came from, the cheapest price isn't a discount; it's a liability.

When an AI agent sends an email from your domain, the receiving server checks SPF to see whether the sending server is authorized.
SPF fits at the delivery layer, not the data layer. You can have the best contact data in the world, but if your agent sends from an IP that is not in your SPF record, your messages will likely fail authentication. Failed authentication means lower inbox placement. Lower inbox placement means your agent's replies are dead on arrival.
This is not a niche concern. In agent-native prospecting, the AI agent sends more emails, faster, from multiple seats. It can damage a domain reputation in days instead of months.
Does Cognism or Apollo manage SPF? No. SPF lives in your DNS. But the platform you choose can make the workflow better or worse. If it has a clean API and email verification, your agent can suppress bad contacts before sending. If it doesn't, your agent will burn reputation on bad addresses.
Both platforms offer APIs. Cognism's API supports enrichment and email verification, so you can call it at the point of send. Apollo's API is broader, but you need to build more logic around it to avoid sending to unverified contacts.
My practical setup:
- Add an SPF record that includes your agent sending platform.
- Add DKIM signing for the sending domain.
- Align SPF and DKIM with the From domain so you don't fail DMARC.
- Verify every email through an API before the agent sends it.

For a European revenue team doing account-based selling: Cognism. GDPR-aligned mobile data and Signals are worth the premium.
For an AI agent-native prospecting workflow: evaluate API quality first, then delivery infrastructure. Both can work, but you'll get more value from a platform that verifies at the point of send.
For a team in an emergency, 48 hours before campaign launch: pick the tool that verifies email addresses before your agent touches them. The cheapest data is never worth a third campaign failure.
I don't think there is a single winner. There is a winner for your workflow. Compare data compliance, verification, intent, agent delivery, and total value. Pick the one that protects your pipeline and your sender reputation.
And check SPF. Before the agent sends anything.
